Portable LP Gas Can for outdoor pizza oven?

Hey all,

I’m interested in buying a portable outdoor pizza oven. I don’t have LP gas hooked up at my house. I’m wondering if anyone knows a service (Kanagawa) where you can rent/buy a small portable LP gas tank and get it filled at the home. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Also, if there are any issues with this normally for a rental property, that would helpful to know as well.

  1. Honestly, I would just check the neighborhood who has gas bottles outside of their house, and then calling/checking the company whose name’s on it.

I used to have a 5kg ガスボンベ for my balcony bbq in Tokyo, but it was a pain in the ass to get refilled. The same company (fujigas) now only rents bottles for outdoor use…

I hear in the countryside some petrol stations can refill one for you.

  2. You can buy propane tanks easily, even getting them on [Amazon](https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00BFOYZPQ) or Rakuten. Standard size is the 5kg, and the largest is 8kg for home use.

The hard part is getting them filled. You’ll need to find a place local to you (I think there’s a limit on how far you can transport filled propane tanks without a license, or maybe it was just a shop rule), and then fill out some know your customer paperwork. This also includes showing them your Japanese made (believe this is also a law) propane regulator. Also, the regulator has to hook up to the tank directly, so if it’s connecting through a hose my shop mentioned it’s NG.

I spent about 3 man at the propane shop buying a new regulator, new hose, new tank, and the initial filling for my bbq. If your oven is foreign, you may need to buy this new piping, and a Japanese regulator/ adapter in order for them to fill up your tank.

About pricing, my shop offers two services, either bring the tank in, they’ll have it filled and you can pickup a few days later, or a swap service, where they bring you a filled tank and exchange it for your empty one. The exchange is about 4500 jpy for a 5kg tank.

To be honest, it’s a lot of effort, so you might consider buying a wood pellet type pizza oven instead (ex. ooni fyra), which you can pickup domestically, and also easily buy the [woodchips](https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B073F6BT1V) as well.

About your rental property, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ban all outdoor smoke stuff (ex. cigarettes, grilling, etc.), but you’ll have to check your building rules for this.

  3. How large of a tank is needed for your pizza oven?

Asking because curious, but also because you can buy disposable tataki canisters in any shop, and I think the same is used for table-top stoves; may just be large enough to run the oven once?

Edit: quick check on youtube shows that ca 700g of gas is needed to heat up the oven and bake a large, 40cm pizza. So handheld and possibly camping gas bottles are probably out of the question.

  4. Don’t they have them at Costco? I remember them being near the gas station, next to the kerosene…

  5. Hey-

I live in Kanazawa and speak zero Japanese. I have an ooni koda 16 I brought with me. All I did was Google Map LPG store, found one near me and went into buy it. Was expensive compared to everywhere else, but 1 week later I got it. Think you pay for the tank and the full. When I got back to refill it’s a couple thousand yen. Easy. Just Google map a place and go in.

I live in a house so have zero idea about apartments.

Edit: read u/zerosuitsamus comment. I had to give the guy my address but nothing about a regulator or anything.
