As the title says, I’ll be leaving japan within a year (after being here 11 years) I’ve never gotten the card, and am wondering if it will make anything easier before or after we leave. Like will it make the pension or tax things easier, etc.
I will probably be taking the lump sum in regards to pension. I’ve been here for more than 10 years, but I only paid 8 or so years into the system, so there’s no chance of me being able to claim payments. I’ve also got 38/40 of the required units for the US, so there doesn’t seem much point in using the contribution for Social Security.

You can get ¥20,000 worth of points that you can use for shopping if you get the card and complete the points system entry before Sept.
Yes you will get 20k cash. Go to the city hall and apply now.
Regarding your pension because you’re a US citizen you should look into “Totalization” before you proceed with the lump sum withdraw.
Basically, because of totalization you will be able to get a Japanese pension, even though you contributed under 120 months (10 years). It will just be quite a low annuity with only 8 years of contributions.
