Can I buy a phone if my resident card will expire in less than a year?

I will graduate from university March next year and will start working in Japan in April.

My current resident card will expire in May next year, which I’ll change my status of residence from study to work.

I got rejected from making a new Yucho cash card once because at the time my resident card only had 3 months left.

I’m thinking about buying a new phone but I wonder if they will reject me because of this.

  1. No one can prevent you from going on Amazon an purchasing a _phone_.

If your question is about cellular contract, I think povo.jp and other providers like it only require a valid resident card + some payment card. If you don’t have the latter, you can probably use virtual card from LinePay or open an account with Revolut or Wise.

  2. If it’s a month to month, like Ahamo, you can.
Companies that have 2 year contracts won’t let you sign up, and you wouldn’t be able to get a phone on installments from them until you extend your visa validity.

  3. Never been rejected by a major phone company for having a 1-year visa. However they might make you pay for the phone all at once rather than monthly installments, to avoid the risk of you skipping the country with a nice new phone that hasn’t been completely paid for.

  4. I just tried getting a new sim in store at Yodobashi. Ahamo soft rejected me and told me I’d have to make almost a whole year worth of payment up front. Y Mobile gave me a new number with no problem.
