I’m a student at Penn State University, and I’ve been accepted for the JYPE exchange program with Tohoku University for this coming Spring, and I’m very tempted to commit, but there’s one issue: I don’t know any Japanese. I’ve travelled to the country before and I think I’ll be able to get around well enough, and my classes will be taught in English, however I am a little worried about meeting people and making friends. I know the university has a decent presence of other international students, but since I’m the only one coming from my university I’m worried it’ll be hard to meet people. I’ll be taking a course in Japanese while I’m there and I’ll try to learn a little bit over the coming months using Duolingo before the program, but I doubt I’ll be able to speak it well enough to really have a conversation until I’ve been there for a month or two. Has anyone here attended/is attending Tohoku?
