Staying on the Izu Peninsula

Hey guys!

In a few days time my partner and I are staying briefly in Izu more specifically right next to Futo train station for three days. Just curious if anyone has any suggestions of what to do and see around us for our three days. Unfortunately we are limited to public transport though as we don’t have our licenses to rent a car 🙁

Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated!

Thanks 🙂

  1. Public transport only is going to be a bit rough, as Izu is rather spread out in terms of things to do.

The good news is you’re only about 15mins by taxi away from Shaboten Park, where I can definitely recommend killing at least half a day (as long as you get reasonable weather).

Also you’re quite close (~15mins by taxi) to Jōgasaki, where you can spend two or three hours wandering along the coast.

  2. If you like capybaras, I recommend Izu Shaboten zoo! A bus goes there from the station. They don’t have a lot of other animals there (which I think is a good thing if they don’t have the space) but the capys roam around freely and will approach you to be petted.

  3. Mt Omuro vid chairlift is gorgeous for a quick visit – it’s right across from the zoo and lovely views if the weather’s good

  4. Take the train back up to Izu-Taga Station. Nice beach over there and it’s walkable from the station. Ito Station has beaches too and hot springs, but the Izu-Taga beach is better in my opinion.

I think I may have stayed at the same place as you, so walk uphill through the streets to the main road and there’s a great kaiten-zushi place there near the konbinis

  5. Make sure you have a lot of water. Those hills will try to kill you.

You could just stay in and enjoy quality time with your partner…

Or it’s a 9min car ride to Omuroyama Lift Platform, where you can ride the cable car up the volcano, or rent bicycle for downhill riding or just riding around from this business: [https://www.jalan.net/kankou/spt_guide000000183288/?screenId=OUW1701](https://www.jalan.net/kankou/spt_guide000000183288/?screenId=OUW1701)

  6. We just got back from Izu. Amazing place. We rented a car but later found out that it has a great bus network. Tokai bus. You can get a bus pass. We went one day to Shimoda. The city center has a gondola to this amazing shrine atop with great views. There’s also really good beaches there. Next we visited Mt Omuro and the adjacent zoo. Other options are Mishima city and one of the numerous onsens. Hokka onsen has amazing views and only 600¥ entry.
