Buying full suite of audio-video equipment for YouTube home studio

Hi all,

I am looking at putting together a compact home studio for filming here in Japan (central Tokyo). From scratch. Mostly talking head stuff, maybe some product introductions, ideally with an A-camera, a B-camera and a top-down camera setup.

Is there a professional one-stop shop where I can get expert advice and, due to buying everything at that one store, some kind of a discount? BicCamera immediately comes to mind and I have visited them already, but they didn’t seem to have a great selection of lighting or stands (pretty much everything was a camera tripod, designed to be mobile).

In case it’s relevant, my budget is anywhere between JPY 1.0M and JPY 1.8M. I’m looking at the Sony FX3 for my A-roll camera.

Any other tips would also be much appreciated!

Thank you.

  1. You’ll probably get better results if you do your own research to understand exactly what you need first and then order it online. Most of the well-known gear brands used by YouTubers will be widely available in Japan.

This is because a YouTube “home studio” can be almost anything and is entirely personal. At the most basic level, this can be as simple as a recent iPhone with some led lights and a microphone. You can even edit on the phone instead of a dedicated computer these days.

  2. 1. Content should be your focus, not gear.
    2. If you are asking what to buy this implies you don’t know so are very likely to blow money on unnecessary gear.
    3. iPhones shoot 4K 60fps, sunlight is free
    4. You can’t buy success.
    5. Have you factored in rent of the place to set this all up ?
    6. If you are intent on blowing money on things you most likely don’t need or know how to use then search for studio set ups in YouTube and filter by your budget.
    7. Marques Brownlee spends like you want to so try his studio set up videos, or tours of his studio space.
    8. The gear you want will be the same cost everywhere overall. I buy all my gear on Amazon. Same or next day shipping and don’t need to leave the house.
    9. You have the funds to rent a studio by the hour to figure out what you need .
    10. Not all yodabashi / Bic stores display the same gear. Find ones that focus on video.
    11. Seriously. Start with an iPhone and find out if anyone wants to watch your content. If you can’t succeed at that the gear you have won’t make a blind bit of difference.

    Happy shopping 🙂
