Tamagawa Fireworks Festival

Hi everyone,

I will be visiting Japan this fall for two weeks with Saturday (Oct 21) being my last day in Tokyo. I’ve seen the ‘Tamagawa Fireworks Festival’ advertised on a few sites stating that it should be happening around 6pm at the Futako-Tamagawa Sports Ground that night. However, that is the extent of my knowledge. It is advertised as free, so I assume I can just show up to the grounds marked on the map on the website? Is there anything else I should know before going? I’m not planning on snagging a picnic spot or anything, just hoping to see a bit of the festival and fireworks. The location is about an hour from where I’m staying in the city so I’m wondering if it’s worth visiting as my last activity in the city.

Thank you in advance!

  1. Make sure you bring a backpack full of drinks and food for yourself. It gets super crowded and the commute home will be a bit overwhelming.

  2. You won’t be able to enter the grounds since there is a paid section. But you can see the fireworks anywhere in the area. So just get off at Futako Tamagawa or Futako Shinchi (opposite side of the river) and walk along the bank with everyone else. Get there an hour early, it will be crowded.

  3. We watch the fireworks every time they’re held, but we never go down to the grounds because we don’t feel like dealing with the masses of people both there and, more specially, going to and from the grounds. We find a place at the top of a hill overlooking the grounds and watch from there.

I’d recommend finding a map showing elevations and going to a station near a spot that is *not* on the line serving the nearest station.

We’ll be watching from such a spot this year and will be home 15 minutes after the fireworks end.
