I’ve been in occasional touch with my old Japanese teacher, and we exchange messages for birthdays and special occasions like New Year’s. About a month ago, she sadly informed me of her mother’s passing.
Now, I’m mildly aware of the mourning period customs in Japan. My teacher’s birthday is at the end of this month, and I’m torn about whether it’s appropriate to send her a happy birthday message.
I’d greatly appreciate any insights or advice on how to handle this situation respectfully and thoughtfully. Thank you in advance for your guidance.

Avoid “happy” birthday or other congratulatory/celebratory remarks. But acknowledge the date, that she’s in your thoughts during the occasion, and some well-wishes about her health and well-being.
Note that the first fifty days after a death is special and if it’s still within that period, I would suggest the message especially focus on condolences rather than the birthday.
