Been back on a shopping spree on Mercari again recently, and now that it’s been nearly 10 years (crazy) I gotta ask.
What in the world is that funk coming off stuff I buy from Mercari? It’s not all the time, but a majority of things (skii wear, headphones, laptop, etc.) all come with this very specific smell that’s quite strong and lingers for a couple weeks.
By no means a bad smell and I may just be overly sensitive, but its a bit artificial and the funk puts me off a bit.
Anyone one know what I’m talking about? And where do you think it comes from? Detergent, storage, during shipping, etc. (Or is it best I don’t know..)

I recently bought something from Mercari and it stunk like mothballs. 2 weeks later I can still smell mothballs. Brings back childhood memories at my grandparent’s house.
I use Mercari a lot but haven’t come across this. Is it the same smell every time? Maybe the sellers are spraying the items with Febreze or similar odor spray.

Did you check their profile to see if they smoke? I have gotten smoke smelling clothes in the past.
