Are Teamlabs Gardens/Planets a bad idea for someone with epilepsy?

Planning to be in Osaka and Tokyo this November. I was wondering how severe the lights tend to be at either attraction. We know that a lot of it is based around lights but I was wondering if the attractions have heavy use of flashing/strobe lights

  1. I would strongly advise against it for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy.

Off the top of my head list of other things you could do in Osaka: Open Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses (in a large park, good Indian restaurant nearby), Sakuya Konohana Kan (garden with outdoor and greenhouse areas, unique plants from all over the world, the carnivorous ones were super cool), Osaka Museum of Housing and Living (indoor recreation of an Edo era town where you can explore houses/businesses). You could also look into leaf viewing trains depending on when the leaves turn this year.

Best of luck with your planning!

  2. I wouldn’t risk it, not least because TeamLabs Planets (if that’s the one in Tokyo) was kind of a waste of time when we went. If you have an imagination, you’re fine without having gone.

Other places in which you should be wary are any kinds of themed restaurants, which often include flashing lights.

  3. Yeah, I would say so! I also got motion sickness in the rose petal room and I never get motion sickness

  4. That one section is pretty dramatic with the light flashing . So much so I was wondering why they didn’t have an epilepsy warning ( if they did , I am surprised they didn’t make it patently clear). .

  5. I think teamLab Botanical Garden should actually be no problem, there weren’t any rapidly flashing lights there and everything was very calm anyways when I was there 1 month ago

  6. TeamLab Gardens in Osaka, you will be fine. It’s rather soothing with smooth lighting transitions.

I didn’t go to the Planets one in Tokyo though so can’t speak to that.
