Whitefish?

Obviously I have ebi and unagi. But can anyone identify this whitefish? This is in Tennessee. I’m guessing tilapia but I really have no idea. Any help would be awesome!

  1. It’s tilapia. The pink says it. Snapper usually has a skin, to show you its snapper. Tilapia doesn’t because it’s cheap. They love to use it in “chefs choice” meals.

  2. I wouldn’t order sushi in Tennessee, especially not if it comes on a plastic little plate like that. But yeah that looks like it passes for snapper or yellowtail

  3. I don’t think it’s tilapia, it looks like yellowtail or red snapper. I used to work in a sushi kitchen. I can’t imagine anyone using tilapia in sushi

  4. If it’s a reputable sushi restaurant, that’s rockcod and not tilapia

Definitely not yellowtail. The color’s totally off

  5. Looks like hamachi to me, cut in a way that just shows the white portion.

Surprises me that people here believe that to be tilapia… I’ve never seen it on a menu before. Not sure I’ve ever had it, or really any fresh water fish served as nigiri or sashimi.

  6. 99% sure this is hamachi (yellow tail), this comment section is on crack. (Source: I’m a sushi chef)

  7. I really don’t think you should eat raw tilapia if that is tilapia. I love sushi but I really don’t like eating raw fish. I like raw salmon and tuna but that’s about it I wouldn’t eat any raw white fish

  8. This is Hamachi, AKA Yellowtail, NOT Tilapia.

Sushi is almost exclusively made with Saltwater Fish, and Tilapia is mostly Freshwater.
