You mean homophones? And words including that sound but with different meaning? Try search かな of the word you’re looking for in an online dictionary, I think that’s probably the easiest way.
Don’t know about word families, but the word for etymology is 語源、and you can get a lot of milage from just searching that plus the word you’re interested in.

Searching through kana, or romaji (I forgot I could do that) is helpful. It’s not what I was looking for but I can use that instead to make groups of words.

You can use the online dictionary [WWWJDIC](https://www.edrdg.org/cgi-bin/wwwjdic/wwwjdic?1C) to search for words using a specific Kanji.
For example, here is the result of a search for words containing the character 雪: https://www.edrdg.org/cgi-bin/wwwjdic/wwwjdic?1MDJ%C0%E3.
