is Busuu good for learning beginner Japanese, and if so, when should you move on from it?

i have a friend whos like a year and a half younger than me. i speak decent japanese, as i attended some lessons, as well as a lot of self study. although i couldve done it all a lot better, i would say my study method was pretty good. however, my friend also wants to learn. i told him my study method, and he tried it out, but he said it didnt work great for him, or he just didnt fully get it.

so i said “okay, maybe is there an app to learn basics first?” and we did some research. i came across an app called Busuu, made by Chegg, which by the way is a pretty trustworthy app. So i went through a little bit of it, and it seems okay, but im still uncertain. can ANYONE who has learned ANY amount of Japanese with Busuu tell me if the japanese course for Busuu is good for am a complete beginner, as well as if he should stop at one point and continue with a different study method, or if its good to complete the whole thing?

if you have used busuu to learn Japanese, please i ask that you describe the experience, anything that you thought was really good about it, any problems, and any weaknesses that should be filled in by using other apps or methods? thank you so much

  1. I’d say when you learn hiragana, katana and basic sentence structure, you’re good to go. For how long you want to use the app is all up to you. You’ll find your own way of learning Japanese trust us
