  1. Given how thin skinned Japanese people are, this will quickly turn into a shit fest.

  2. It’s definitely the government protecting themselves from criticism. Japan censures criticism to the government, officials or politicians reporting it as an insult.
    They don’t care about the people they just want to protect their image and make these laws to do so.

  3. This is one topic the Japanese people needs to fight against. This will protect the government more than the people and is a step backwards for their freedoms.

  4. It’s annoying how often misinformation about this law is shared in reddit. This is an anti-cyberbullying law and the language used in japanese isn’t “insults”, it’s a specific form of harassment and it has scope. It’s in reaction to the suicide of the woman Hana from terrace house who was severely bullied online.

    Social media in Japan is absolutely brutal, and getting dog piled by people telling you that you’re worthless and that you should kill yourself is a real problem. People absolutely do end up killing themselves from this form of harassment.
