Salary currency through EOR

Has anyone had experience keeping their current job, relocating to Japan, and having an EOR or PEO handle their payroll? It seems like you’ll need to have a letter of employment with your salary for general services in Japan, but I’m curious if everyone needed to negotiate their salary in yen, rather than USD, EUR, or whatever the currency is of their company’s base country.

I would prefer to negotiate my salary in my home country’s salary, but I’m not sure if this is allowed in Japan since the exchange rate is flexible, how that affects taxes, etc.

Edit: I’m assuming I need to negotiate my salary in yen, especially if I’m applying for the HSP visa.

  2. Hi yes I have experience with a GEO!

The way it works, your company will find one and set up a contract with them, the GEO will then hire you and you’ll essentially work on contract with the foreign-based company. So your employer of record will be the GEO. And your paycheck would have the GEO name. In other words, whatever benefits your foreign-based company has, would generally not carry (such as any points-conferring aspects for an HSP visa). You may also lose PTO, etc as you would be a contract employee.

This isn’t something you go and find and being to your company, they won’t talk to you, generally.

I’ve not heard of someone using them to move here from the start, only once they’ve already moved here.

Velocity Global (I did not work for them, but I know people who have) is one well-known GEO.
