I’m a Japanese student. Ask me questions about growing up/school life in Japan!

Any weird questions will be ignored.
Please be respectful 🙂

  1. The media reports that make it out of Japan paint japanese teachers as uncaring and often cruel (for example kimodameshi, or also victim blaming in bullying cases).

    How have your teachers been?

  2. What is your favorite school lunch? Do you eat any other meals at school, like breakfast?

  3. Some teachers meddle in their students affairs way too much (forcing you to make up with a friend after a fight e.t.c),but most teachers and friendly and understanding. Luckily I have never had cruel teachers.

  4. How old are you before you start to get encouraged to decide upon a future career by teachers and parents?

  5. They don’t go into detail about the more cruel things Japan did (Japanese soldiers raping women e.t.c),but we are told that Japan was very aggresive, did bad things to Korea, and that war is stupid and terrible.
We do know how the war ended.

  6. How do you feel about the portrayal of Japanese school life in media (movies, dramas, anime etc)? How accurate is it?

  7. Did you or other students you know have to attend cram schools to prepare for entrance exams for schools?

  8. Have you ever had any experiences studying with foreign students? Are mixed japanese children treated the same way as japanese ones?

  9. How bad is bullying in Japanese schools? I’ve heard a lot and seen some videos, but it seems comparable to the USA when it comes to bullying in public schools. Were you or anybody you know afflicted seriously?

  10. A bit random but I’ve always been curious about the young generation’s favorite celebrities from around the world. Who are your favorite celebrities (Japanese and foreign) and who are the most popular ones that you feel everyone would know of in Japan? I’d love to learn how much knowledge they have on the foreign entertainment industry – for example, singers and actors. Thanks for making this post btw, your answers are a great read 😀

  11. How close are anime about school life and the actual school life? Also, do you guys have japanese as a subject? If so, do students normally struggle with japanese?

  12. Omg – I’ve been teaching myself for about 3 months now. I have so much questions.

    1. How do you feel about so many Americans wanting to learn Japanese?

    2. Best way to learn Vocab? That’s tough for me.

    3. How often do you personally use kanji?

    4. How did you learn English?

  13. Kanji is a really complex part of the Japanese language. While growing up, how did you get past Kanji you haven’t learnt yet whenever you saw it in… say, a book, or signboards, or product packaging etc.?

  14. For Elementary to Junior High, theres is one Saturday a month where we have to go to school for three hours.
My High school is a college prep school that aims to finish three years worth of curriculum in two years,so we have Saturday lessons three times a month.

  15. How is etiquette? Like how are you expected to behave in class? Standing while answering questions, formality etc.?

What are normal subjects taught? What are common electives?

Are clubs as big/profound as they seem in amine?

How is English taught? I’ve heard the English education in japan is atrocious.

  16. 日本語で返事して下されば嬉しいです。貴女の友達や同級生はどんなバンドとかテレビ番組が好きですか。

  17. thanks for taking the time to answer these questions! I was wondering how technology has affected learning in Japan, specifically regarding kanji. it just seems so cumbersome do write kanji by hand, when compared to writing on a keyboard that I would assume people write by hand less and less. can people still write kanji by hand, or is it becoming a thing of the past? thanks!

  18. Entrance exams are so huge in Japan in order to get into good schools. We seldom have things like that in the US. The exams you take in order to get into Universities are things like SATs and ACTs, sometimes GREs for graduate school. Other than that, you might be able to go your whole life never truly having to take these. I never took the SAT and graduated from a university. People often remark that it was crazy that I never took the SAT, but here I am. How often does one just skip the whole needless examination process in order to get where you are going in life in Japan. I was just so surprised when my Japanese teacher told us about exams for kindergarteners in Japan that they take to test their intelligence in order to gain entry into the ‘good schools’.

Quite shocking to me. I usually encourage people to find ways to just skip that entire time-wasting time-sink. What are your thoughts?

  19. What is the general perspective of the japanese people about their government during the COVID pandemic?
