Residence Tax when leaving Japan on 31st Dec vs 1st Jan

I was told and read few places that if you leave Japan (permanently) by 31st Dec , you save on a year worth residence tax compared to leaving on 1st Jan.
I am not able to believe it so just wanted to confirm, if anyone has experienced this.

I don’t have PR , just a normal work visa.

  1. I haven’t done it, so I can’t testify. But it’s pretty common knowledge that you’ll save the 10% residence tax if you leave before Jan 1st.

  2. It’s true. Because you are taxed with resident tax IF you live in Japan on January 1. But in reality, if you leave Japan on January 2, it’s difficult for the local government or employer to collect your tax.

  3. Yes it’s true and I saved a shit tonne of money on my crypto tax bill by doing this.
