Want to buy a gaming PC for Video Editing, any advice? tempted by the HP Omen 40L

Thank you in advance! I am finding it hard to get a good read on gaming PC deals compared to the UK where hotukdeals told me everything I needed to know…

But I want to upgrade a 15 year old Dell desktop and the HP Omen 40L looks very good albeit expensive. I think it will at least future proof me and make video editing much more smooth and enjoyable.

Is this a good deal?
(Core i7-13700K/RTX4070Ti/2TB SSD/32GB ram/Water cooling/W11P) for around 313,500 yen

No idea why the kakaku exclusive deal version seems to be more expensive than the standard one, even though it looks like the exact same spec to me, unless I am missing something obvious with google translate?

Happy to hear alternative suggestions too. I heard good things about Mouse and Dospara, but really don’t know how to compare them at that price point. Thanks

  1. I’m not an expert but it feels like you could maybe build a PC with a 4080 and the same CPU for that money? Watch a few build videos, it’s really easy. Like expensive Lego.

  2. Gonna agree with the person above. You can definitely build a better PC yourself for the same price range. In my opinion, watching a build video on YouTube and following it will not only get you a cheaper, stronger PC but you’ll also understand better how it actually works. I built my first one last year and it was a lot easier than I was expecting.

  3. I bought an Omen a few years ago and I regret it. The GPU died just in time for the warranty to end so I bought a new one and it did not fit the case… (standard Asus 3070 does not fit, only their custom one)

Eventually just used it for parts and bought new case and motherboard. I think it is the PC that has lasted the least amount of time for me ever. Perhaps I was just unlucky, but personally I reommend getting parts and building yourself with reputable parts.

  4. If you are buying a desktop, get a BTO from somewhere.

    Avoid brand desktops.

In addition to Mouse and Dospara, there is also PC Koubou, Frontier and Storm PC (online only).

  5. Just build your own. Ensures upgradeability down the road because you didn’t have proprietary parts. Also afaik if one component of a pre built fails you need to send the whole thing back instead of just the part that failed.

Video editing is about an expensive cpu with many cores (like 7950 x3D) and lots of ram, not fast single core or GPU like gaming.

So you have to choose what to prioritize.

Likely a good gaming PC with a gaming CPU like 7600x, 32G ram, and the GPU you can afford on top will do you fine if you want both.

I would go for a prebuild at dospara or the like. No need for watercooling normally.

  7. It’s ultimately going to depend on the market, sales, and timing whether a pre-built is worth it. I bought an Omen 40L after doing only custom builds my whole life and it’s been pretty good. The onboard software is a little annoying but you can just wipe it clean. I made the purchase when GPU prices were ridiculous in Japan and I couldn’t find a 30 series on sale. In that situation it was absolutely cheaper to buy the prebuilt than a custom build part-for-part. I saw the 40L in a deal and have been really impressed by the build quality and the parts they used with it after a year or so.

However, as other people have stated, what you are really paying for with this prebuilt is the GPU, That Ti at the end of your 4070 is bumping up your price range a bit, and you realistically don’t need such a good graphics card for video editing. A nice CPU and RAM will have you sorted.

  8. I don’t know what they’ve been up to these days but HP has had a bad rep for poorly put together systems and using cheaper parts (not the big ones) which causes part failure. Try looking at YT reviews of that model by pros

  9. I get my PCs from Mouse. We use them in studio for video editing and Realtime rendering stuff too and they’ve been solid.

One note on the mouse pcs… The gaming desktops are great but one of ours is water cooled and super heavy whereas our DAIV (mouse sub brand) RTX5000 PC isn’t and is a pretty good chassis for travel if required.

You’ll want to just get something with a good GPU, lots of ram and nvme drives and you’re good to go.

  10. I’ll start by asking you this: do you want a PC that offers you good value for your money or just go with the option that gets you a PC on your desk as quickly as possible?

The reason I’m asking is cuz 300k for a computer is a lot of money if all you wanna do is edit some videos for your YT gaming channel. Is it for a hobby? Work? 4k footage? What about your monitor? Also, what games will you be playing: new triple-A stuff, or just some casual gaming a few hours a week?

With that in mind, if you’re loaded and don’t give a f about anything, go with a pre-built system that suits you best, but comparing prices here would be mendokusai as each store/manufacturer has their own setup. But if that’s what you want, we done here.

Now, if you want to have control over the amount you will spend, on the parts you will have in your system, listen to the people above when they say that building your own PC is the best option, cuz it is! It will not only save you money but give you knowledge that will be useful, let’s say, when you wanna upgrade smth and don’t need to depend on a store charging you a lot for it. And If your fear is the assembly (which is very, very simple to do, really), it’s still preferable to buy the parts yourself and have a store just to put everything together, with cable management and shit for around 1万/1.5万円 I’d guess.

K, so if you’re feeling confident enough to go with this route (I won’t use links as perhaps the post will be blocked?!):

1 Search builds suggestions according to your budget and purpose. There are several forums dedicated to this: **tomshardware**, **techpowerup** and others.

2 Once you know what you want, **Kakaku** is your best friend. I like to buy my stuff online, but depending on where you live, you may be able to find nice deals at your local stores.

3 If you can’t find smth specific and need to replace it, use the **pcpartpicker** website which will show you if your build has any incompatibility between the parts.

4 Suggestions for stores with the best prices imo: **Dospara**/**Tsukumo**/**maybe Amazon + keepa extension,** I might be forgetting others, but again, Kakaku will lead you. And although Black Friday isn’t strong here, occasional deals may appear here and there, so maybe it’s worth waiting 1 month before buying anything.

    GL.
