Need advice on working holiday visa.

So I had a position lined up starting this December but I’ve just been informed that it’s fallen through. Given I’d need to find a new job at relatively short notice, I’m considering delaying the trip until December 2024 (next ski season) but need some advice on how viable that option is.

First of all I’m Australian. I have my visa already, I applied for it in March due to the age cutoff. My visa expires March 2024 and is approved for an initial stay of 6 months. My plan would be to visit Japan for a short holiday in March 2024 before my visa expires, apply for a period of stay extension for an additional 6 months, obtain a re-entry permit upon departure, and then fly back in December 2024 to work that ski season. My period of stay would then expire in March 2025 provided the extension is granted.

Does anyone have any advice on whether they think this would be achievable or any problems I might run into along the way? I recall reading that the extension application should be made within 3 months of expiry. I also recall reading that Australians are able to apply for 2 extensions for a maximum of an 18 month stay, but this information appears to be contradicted on many websites.

  2. Looks like it should be fine, i believe a re entry is fine to get as long as you give them notice?
Also Australians can definitely get two extensions, i did it over there

  3. Yes. 18 months for Australian WHV holders. It comes in 3x 6-month visas that you have to keep renewing. Applying 2 months prior to expiry is the recommended just in case it takes too long but you also don’t want to renew too early as it can technically ‘eat up’ some time iirc.

I did the WHV in 2018 (also Aussie) and stayed 1 year but went back because of uni start dates but I did confirm at some point the 3x renewal thing.
