Need Advice (Interview Process)

Hello Everyone,

So I am interviewing with a smaller startup here in Japan. I’ve passed 2 interviews and for the final interview the want me to share my tax slip with them (源泉徴収票).

Now I have worked in Japan before and I never had a company ask for this until I accepted an offer and signed the contract.

I wanted to know if this is normal? I feel like this is pretty personal information that should only be shared for payroll if you agree to join. But not before a final interview before an offer has even been made.

  1. Some companies do this. Basically they want to make sure they’re paying you the minimal amount. Your last year salary is that threshold and a good starting point for them.

You can play your card, say that you will share that info after you got the offer. Let them deal their card (offering salary) first. Or not, up to you and your confidence level.

  2. No, there is no legal reason why they need to see it, but nothing stopping them from trying. They just want to see what you currently make and probably lowball you.

  3. Some companies ask it before you are officially hired. they want to look at it to know your salary level in the previous job or other reasons.

If you ask if it’s normal, not normal but not so much rare.
