I changed my surname (not due to getting married) on my passport June this year and it has completely slipped my mind that I have to change accordingly on my Zairyu card (work visa) as well, and I am flying out of Japan in a couple days for a week.Would they deny me leaving/returning? I have the name change certificate in English, as well as my previous unusable passport with my previous surname as proof. Any advice or insight is highly appreciated!

You’ll want to go change it in your resident card asap. You’re supposed to update it within two weeks. I wouldn’t rely on them letting you back in. Airline staff may not even let you get on the plane to come back.
I got a new card in about 5 minutes when I went to immigration to change my name. You don’t need to wait for a postcard or anything for a name change. It’s immediate.
This is such an easy fix from my experience. It takes 10 minutes. Pop in and get that thing updated, don’t waste time posting on here 😂
I had a similar situation, changed my name and got a new passport but my embassy took ages to deliver it (around a month).
They questioned me at immigration why I “waited” so long to report the name change and called my embassy to confirm my “story” lol.
Hopefully you won’t have issues because it slipped your mind.
Wait. What’s the name on the ticket? Same as passport right ?
