Working holiday with having a remote job

Hey Redditors! 👋

I know this has been asked a million tomes, but the answers seem to differ with each thread.

Basically, I’m looking into living in Japan for a period of up to a year via the working holiday visa while continuing to work my remote job with a UK-based company.

My main questions:

Is this allowed under the working holiday visa for Japan?
What tax implications would this have? Would taxes be paid only to the UK?
Cheers!

The only restriction on work while on a working holiday is that you can’t work in a bar or in the sex industry. As long as your online remote job isn’t as a content creator for an adult oriented website you shouldn’t have any issues.

Income derived from work that you do while present in Japan is considered domestically sourced income. Generally speaking Japan claims first dibs on taxes owed from such income. You likely would not owe additional taxes to the UK, as the Japan-UK tax treaty should protect you from double taxation. You’ll probably want to discuss with an accountant familiar with the terms of the treaty to figure out who you owe and how much. If you want to have a peak yourself this should have all the details in their legalese glory: [https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/japan-tax-treaties](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/japan-tax-treaties)

You’ll also want to discuss with your employer what sorts of deductions and automatic payments they should be making for you while you’re living abroad.
