Japan Post Customs Declaration: Unaccompanied Baggage

Hey everyone, I need some help on how to classify “unaccompanied baggage” on Japan Post customs declarations.
I’m moving back home to Canada at the end of July. In the next few weeks I’m hoping to ship home most of my stuff by surface Mail. I want to declare these packages as unaccompanied baggage so I don’t have to pay any customs/ duty. But I’m not sure where to write that on the customs form. I’ve shipped some packages home through Japan Post already, so I’m familiar with the online document process, but not sure where to write unaccompanied baggage. Any help would be appreciated!

  1. [Here’s](https://japaneseview.blog.jp/archives/27399453.html) a blog post that talks about sending unaccompanied baggage with Japan Post. You can use Google Translate to read the whole thing, but the gist is:

    1. Sender and receiver have to be the same

    2. Declare it as “other” on the waybill (the address label with the tracking number), and “other” (write in “personal belongings” under it) on the customs form

    3. Make an itemized invoice, and list and assign an approximate value to everything being sent.

    4. If the value of your goods is over 200k yen, there’s an additional form required that officially gives Japan Post permission to clear your items through customs on your behalf.

  2. Jamar is spot on, and for the Canadian side just make sure you provide your inventory to the Canada Customs agent at your point of entry to Canada and advise them you have personal effects/goods to follow. They’ll give you a document that you can supply to Canada Post if they attempt to assess duties on it (they didn’t for me but you never know). There’s some more info [here](https://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/mrc-drc-eng.html).
