Itinerary Check and Advice – 10 nights in kyushu in December

Hi everyone, my partner and I are visiting the Kyushu Region next month and I was hoping for some thoughts on our Itinerary. Thank you for the help!

7 Dec – Stay in fukuoka

* Arrive in fukuoka (12noon)
* Visit Hakata Region for ramen, Tenjin Underground mall, soy sauce tasting

8 Dec – Stay in fukuoka

* Ohori park and castle
* Nishi Park
* See tatai food stores
* Nakasu area

​

9 Dec – Stay in Nagasaki

* Pick up car and drive to nagasaki
* On the drive stop by: Ikoma Plateau, okawachiyama village
* See gunkanjima area in nagasaki

​

10 Dec – Stay in Nagasaki

* Short day trip to: Mt Inasa Observatory, Glover garden
* Visit dejima in nagasaki

​

11 Dec – Stay in Kumamoto

* Drive to Kumamoto
* On the drive stop by: SHiomi park observatory, Ukiha Inari Shring, Ryu Shrine
* See kumamoto cash (if still open)

​

12 Dec – Stay in Kurokawa Onsen

* Kumamoto castle (if not seen yet)
* Suizenji Jojuen Garden
* Drive to kurokawa onsen
* Drop by: Tachiho Gorge, Mt Aso + Aso Sanjo Public square

13 Dec – Stay in Kurokawa Onsen

* Short day trip to Mt Unzen

​

14 Dec – Stay in Yufuin Onsen

* Drive to Yufuin
* Drop by: Kokonoe Yume Bridge, Yufuin floral village
* Chill in onsen

15 Dec – Stay in Miyazaki

* Drive to beppu for short day trip
* Beppu: 7 Hells
* Drive to miyazaki
* Drop by: Mount Tsurumi, Usuki, Kumano Magaibutsu, Rokugo Manzen

16 Dec – Stay in Miyazaki

* Visit devils washboard

​

17 Dec – Leave

* Drop partner off for farm stay with her family
* Drive back to fukuoka alone and take a plane (4.20pm)

  1. Consider visiting Kagoshima if you can, Sengan-en is gorgeous, worth the trip there alone and easily accessible by car. Unless you have a very specific reason for visiting Miyazaki I’d choose Kagoshima over it every time.

    If Japanese history is your thing and you don’t mind reserving tickets beforehand, consider doing Shiomi Park and Ukiha Inari on another day (visiting Shiomi Park basically means driving back to Fukuoka anyhow) and take a car ferry from Taira or Shimabara over to Kumamoto instead. The former will place Reigando cave directly on your route to Kumamoto, while the latter is an interesting historical/onsen town in its own right.
