Got inspired by a post on r/cooking. What is a nice Christmas gift that is high quality but can be bought at a reasonable price? Like a Japanese equivalent to receiving vanilla bean paste / high end cheese?
I was given a nice ice cream spoon a decade ago. A couple/few thousand yen.
10 ticket pack of end of the year jumbo, will run you exactly 3000 lol
You can get some nice honey for that amount, but don’t buy the generic supermarket crap. There are local/speciality/artisan stores which specialize in it (look online for store locations by googling things like Japanese mountain honey, or Japanese honey shops etc.). Another good place to find good quality honey is at artisan markets, which often pop up at local festivals or events (which is where I found the last honey I brought, which I paid about 4000 yen for, but it is a quite decent sized jar).
A mother of pearl spoon sounds about right
High end handkerchiefs, a notebook, socks, nail clippers are all items that you can get for good quality for a 3000 yen price mark.
For whom? ¥3000 is not necessarily high-end but can be acceptable in some cases. Sometimes, the price doesn’t matter. Sometimes, it is where you buy it from.
One mango or a bunch of shine muscat grapes
Loft, specifically the Ginza location, has a lot of these types of gifts. Really nice mugs, fancy cocktail mixes, high-end umeboshi. Tiny plants or imported teas. It’s fun to go and walk around and you’ll easily walk out with something nice no matter your budget.
Have you thought about a bottle opener or some place mats, I saw some that came really nicely presented and packaged.
If the recipient is into sushi, you can find some artisanal aged shoyu around 3000 mark. Something like Yamaroku shoyu.
Something from Dean & Deluca could be nice. Actually, it’s a bit over the budget, but they have catalog gifts. Basically, you pay around 4200-4400 yen and the recipient gets a catalog that they can choose one item from. My wife and I received one from a friend after we got married, and at first I thought it was low-effort, but it was actually fun to browse through it and pick something we actually wanted.
If you’re willing to pay slightly more, Roku is a beautiful gin.
