I found the grave, now how do I contact the cemetery caretaker/personnel?

Does anyone know how I can contact the staff or caretaker of a particular cemetery in Japan? I would like to speak with them regarding the upkeep of a family grave that was left unkept for a while. While at the cemetery I did not see anyone around and the small shrine at the location seemed very inactive and closed. It seems they have newer graves so I doubt that it’s been left completely abandoned.

  1. If it’s your family and you are just weeding and washing, go for it.

Just be very careful about disturbing the placement of the grave stones.

Would be nice to offer an offering and flowers by way of introduction to your ancestors.

And don’t forget to take food away with you to discourage critters. Flowers you can leave behind.

  2. This city hall should have records. Failing that, ask some old people in the area who are in their 70s or 80s if they know anything. Surprisingly, they usually do.
