Moving from Osaka to Tokyo but will be out of the country for some time, advice needed.

Hi, I’m currently trying to figure out how to move from Osaka to Tokyo while being abroad for one month.

I’m abroad right now for work and will be arriving early december and have around 10 days before I need to go abroad again and come back mid January. My hope was to find a place in those 10 days in December and sign the contract so that by the time I get back on mid January I’m able to start moving to the new place. I am hoping to be able to move to Tokyo by the start of February so I was wondering what’s the process like with realtors/fudosan when moving to other prefectures.

My previous experience moving was moving in the same district so I just went to a local fudosan and was able to look at 3 to 4 places before I decided on the one I liked. But given this is not easy to do as I’m moving to another prefecture I’m unsure how the process is like.

I’ve set aside like 3 to 4 days in which I can go and look at apartments in the Tokyo/Chiba area so that I at least have some grasp of how the apartment actually looks and the neighborhood feels.

I’m currently thinking of contacting a local franchise(Like Eiburu) and asking if they can help me find an apartment in Tokyo and hopefully once I look at those apartments I might be able to go back to Osaka and then do the rest of the paperwork there.

I’m also thinking of directly contacting the fudosan in Tokyo and seeing what they have but I have doubts as to how the contract will be done as I will not be in Tokyo for more than 4 days I expect.

Of course if there’s any advice related to moving and the general Tokyo area please share as I literally have no idea of Tokyo whatsoever.

  1. If it’s of any help, my sales manager has been able to do remote viewing and work with tight schedules with enough warning and a good picture of what you are looking for. We usually work with budgets from 500k yen, I’m not sure if it is against the rules of this sub but feel free to send me a message.

  2. Do you plan on paying for the time you won’t be there? I doubt you’ll find somewhere that’s available to view that won’t expect you to move-in ASAP. You didn’t mention which part of Tokyo but any decent apartment will be taken, often before the previous tenant moves out.

So two choices – pay from December (or the start of January if you are lucky and they need to clean/refurbish the place) or put an application in sight unseen, and hope it’s as nice as you want it to be.

Or third one, you could rent an Airbnb for a month in January and take your time.
