I currently have a US iPhone 13 Pro with Japanese SIM, latest iOS 16+, and \*still have no shutter sound\* when used in Japan.
Historically buying an overseas iPhone was the only way to get around the forced shutter sound on Japanese iPhones. I’ve read iOS 15 allows users to turn off the shutter sound on Japanese iPhones when overseas, based on something like IP address or cellular signal (technology unknown – please clarify if you know how they do it).
I’m asking the opposite – for an overseas iPhone 15 Pro using a \*Japanese SIM card\* (for arguments sake, we’ll say a regular, monthly plan which needs a Japanese address and bank account, not a temporary tourist SIM card) and when used in Japan – will it still make a shutter sound when used in Japan?
Anyone who can confirm from personal experience?

No, you won’t have a shutter sound.
Foreign phone, overseas: no forced sound
Foreign phone, in Japan: no forced sound
Japanese phone, overseas: no forced sound (this was the iOS 15 change)
Japanese phone, in Japan: yes forced sound
I have been using overseas iphone for 5 years with japanese sim card (docomo), no shutter.
Now that I live in Japan I can post here, yay.
Something to keep in mind is that different models/countries support different cellular bands. If you want the best signal then it’s important to make sure the bands match, like what u/[**kansaikinki**](https://www.reddit.com/user/kansaikinki/) said.
