notified to the police for parking in a guest spot in my apartment complex

i live in an apartment complex with several parking spots for guests. i do not have a parking spot in my parking complex because my car exceeds the size limit of the parking spot so i rent a space a about 500 meters from my apartment. i see people parking on the spot on daily bases so i decided to leave my car there for a night because it was raining a lot that day. the next day, i come to my car to see a notice on my car saying due to the constant parking, you will be notified to the police. first i do not understand the constant parking part since maybe it was my second time parking and the first time leaving it overnight. secondly, since it is a parking spot meant for guests, can the police do anything? i am guessing it is nothing to worry about but i do not see why they do this. anyone has similar experience in Japan? it is not like i left it for days without moving or something

  1. Many apartment complexes with parking for guests have a reservation system and rules about the hours that it can be used. Whenever I visit friends they reserve me a space through their management company and my vehicle license plate is registered for the specific spot assigned to me.

  2. wait for the police but it’s probably a threat. Anyone you can apologize to, Supervisor/Landlord?

You aren’t a guest. Assume nothing, just do the correct thing and park in the space you have.

  3. Being a private space… I don’t see how they can give you a ticket.
I don’t drive here in Japan but… Fines are for using wrongfully the public space.

  4. Huh?

The police can’t do anything legally, they can tell you to move you car and hassle you but you live there right? Your apartment owner can probably do more than the police

  5. Take the note and put it on the car that’s parking in the other guy’s designated parking space in that earlier thread.

It will be interesting to see how events unfold.

  6. It is a “complex” issue. I suggest you buy (or rent) a house with a parking right in front of your door, but not more than three steps and no stairs.

  7. Move your car and photocopy the paper. Stick it to any car you see parked there in future. My old apartment did something similar to me and only me. Every other guest/resident had no repercussions. It wasn’t until I did the above that it stopped happening to me.

  8. Just don‘t do it again, and put the sticker on some other car. Stupid rules, a bit more flexibility could help all of us. Police won‘t do shit, this is not public space

  9. The parking spaces are reserved for guests, not residents. Just like resident spaces are reserved for residents, not guests. You can’t have it both ways.

You can’t not pay for a resident parking space and just help yourself to parking overnight in the guest parking spots (that are limited and probably require the guest to be registered). That’s not your spot. Either continue to park in your parking spot 500 meters away OOOOOR sell your oversized vehicle for one that fits. Don’t take up spaces not designated for you unless you want to run the risk of being towed/fined.

It doesn’t matter how long or short you parked there – you are not/were not approved to be parked in that spot. Your spot that you reserved is 500 meters away, go there and buy an umbrella. A little rain isn’t going to hurt you. How would you feel if someone came in and parked in your spot leaving you with nowhere to park? Probably not very good.

  10. Not all apartment buildings have reservation systems for their guest parking spots. Sometimes it is first come, first serve.

I have had a similar experience and they are generally empty threats. You probably took the spot of a person that wanted to park there but couldn’t so they made a bogus letter.

  11. I think the other issues have been well-addressed, but I wanted to address the “constant” parking portion of this. This sounds like a translation issue to me. Are you sure they didn’t mean “continuous” (like the spot only allows parking for an hour, but you parked overnight)?

  12. The police will do nothing other than, at most, contact you ask inform you of the complaint.

Source: I own a parking lot.

But dude, don’t shit where you live.

  13. You probably need to reserve the guest parking space, and they probably had your plate on file from the last time you did it without registering

  14. *eye roll to end all eye rolls* Park in your own space, so that peace can be had by all. (I know, I know, 500m is an inconceivably far, far away distance, but consider it a proof of your resilience)

(All the above meant in good humor, no nasty judgment here. I get that it’s annoying, but the solution is pretty simple)
