Switching From Yookoso to Genki

So I am transferring from my community college that went through the first yookoso textbook into university that uses Genki. Is there anything that might be in Genki 1 that was not in yookoso 1 and visa versa that I need to watch out for? I am moving states as well I have to complete an exam to transfer and I am sooo nervous. I want to test into Japanese 2 else it’ll mess up my whole schedule.

  1. There might have been a little bit more in Yookoso! Book 1 than Genki Book 1.

For example, giving reasons with し and reporting hearsay with そうだ is covered in Yookoso, Book 1, Chapter 7 while it is covered in Chapter 13 (first chapter) of Genki Book 2.

  2. I feel like Nakama and Yokoso both have more thank Genki does, but Genki is more streamlined. Also, because Genki isn’t published by an America textbook publisher, it’s cheaper and there aren’t any paywalls (online workbook, etc.).

Overall, however, they should cover the same material, just in a different order. Also, while one book may explicitly teach a grammar point, another might have you learn it from context.

For example, in the intermediate textbook Quartet, they use the pattern だけではなく、〜も〜 (not just ~, but also ~) isn’t explicitly taught as it is in Tobira.

Example: 彼女は有名な歌手だけではなくて、女優としても知られています。She’s not just a famous singer, but she’s also known as an actress.
