GABA’s new policies will make teachers pay fines up to ¥6500 for canceling lessons.

Looks like this is going to be a shitshow. Even if you get sick, have a death in the family, or even vomit on yourself in the office, they’ll fine you.

  1. I saw Chris Broad covering this even.

I think that’ll actually cut into their hiring pipeline since so many coming to japan hopefulls watch him.

  2. this is obviously terrible, and nobody/no company should propose something like this in the first place. but to be fair, this is one of those cases where the market should actually be able to regulate itself. I could make a language school and tell the teachers that they actually have to pay ME to work for me. but I wouldn’t find anyone willing to do that. same with Gaba, they can introduce the most draconic shit, but if people refuse to work under those conditions, then that’s the end of it. but if people are willing to work even under those conditions…well then perhaps it’s more that Gaba is smart for knowing its target audience?

  3. Form a Line group and coordinate a mass resignation. NOVA is bad. Nobody should have to work for these people. HELLOWORK here we come! Please do it! 100 people at the same time. They and Gaba are not worth working for.

    Never Forget:
Nozomu Sahashi, the former president of NOVA, was convicted of embezzlement. Specifically, he was found guilty of illegally diverting funds from employee welfare benefit trusts to help cover NOVA’s operating expenses as the company faced financial difficulties. This misappropriation of funds was a serious breach of corporate and legal trust, contributing to the company’s eventual bankruptcy and impacting thousands of employees and students. Sahashi’s actions and the collapse of NOVA highlighted significant issues in corporate governance and the language school industry in Japan.

  4. Ok, so I’m too lazy to break out a calculator so someone help me out.

How many lessons do I need to teach to get a day off?

  5. I’m actually glad this is so bad. Not because I want Gaba’s instructors to suffer, but because it’s a good thing that Japan’s English teaching industry is being called out.

  6. This is crazy, especially in a Post-Covid world. I wouldn’t be shocked if a GABA related outbreak happened thanks to this policy.

  7. Maybe they are tired of people saying their mother died for the third time in the same month.

I had the one colleague like that who would pretend a family member had died every time there was a new game at the nearest Pachinko.
I think she ‘lost’ at least five persons in 2 months.

She thought it was okay to tell us the truth and make fun of our employers for believing her and even giving her ‘grief’ money.

  8. It’s just baffling that the policies could pass through various levels of management and still be approved. How do they not see this will just lead to mass resignations and a flood of strikes from the union. Gaba and Nova already had bad reputations but I can’t seem them ever recovering from this

  9. I think the real shocking thing is how the Japanese government allows this to happen. Technically speaking, Gaba /nova is not doing anything illegal. Since the employees are independent contractors this is all A-OK with the Japanese labor laws.

The real anger should be directed towards the ability of these companies to hire people as independent contractors therefore exploiting them this way
