Finding bulk butter, want to buy 1kg or more

Hi folks,
I’m about to take the plane back to Japan from Sweden now, suitcase filled with Swedish essential ( like a whole cheese wheel that is below 10kg and will be declared). Now, my wife has a severe need for butter. Hokkaido butter is about the same quality as the Swedish butter but it comes in small packages. I know from living in Japan this year that there is butter, but it’s expensive and comes in small boxes while in Sweden, the butter usually comes in 500g packages. Anyways, is there a way I can buy butter in bulk? I’m fine with buying 10kg packages but I need to know where I can buy that. I will be in Tokyo for the next few days so if you know a specific store, I will be really appreciative for your advice.

Thank you again for your help

  1. I don’t know if you’ll find 10 kg there, but I recommend you stop by Tomiz in the Keio Department Store Shinjuku. In addition to having tons of flour and chocolate varieties sold in different formats, I remember hey have a fridge full of butter, some in rather large size if I recall correctly.

  2. Costco is the best I’ve found. 800 grams(in four 200 gram boxes) for about 1300 yen. It’s still expensive and a smaller quantity but better price than buying a bunch at the regular market. Though I wonder where all the bakeries and pastry shops source their butter…

  3. Gyomu and Costco.

Don’t forget to bring pärlaocker to your cinnamon rolls. Impossible to find in Japan!

  4. That’s like asking for a source for cheap milk in 4L jugs. Not happening, except possibly Costco.

The dairy industry in Japan is highly regulated, much like it is in most Western countries. If there are arrangements for bulk sales to bakeries and other businesses, I suspect it must be illegal to sell on to consumers.
