Hello,
I am filling out the form for getting my pension back after leaving Japan. Do I need fill out the ‘your coverage history’ part or is that just if I don’t know my pension number?
It says on the entry instructions on the next page:
“If you do not know your Basic Pension Number, complete the ‘Your coverage history’ column on page 16.”
It would seem like I don’t need to fill that out because I have both the handbook and the number, but I just wanted to get a second opinion.

If I’m understanding your question correctly you should be fine (with just providing the pension number) but if you prefer to double check, the Pension Office has an English hotline:

If you give your Pension Number to the office, you don’t need to fill the box because they can check your history from Pension Number.
I think “coverage history” is mostly for people who *accidentally* ended up with “rouge” pensions… where, before MyNumber in 2015, they contributed to pension (either national or employee) and then moved/changed jobs and for whatever XYZ reason never provided their pensionID to their new city/employer to carry on their current pension record, thus a new pensionID being made and then the pension contributions made prior lost in the void.
People in such a situation can merge their rouge pensions with their current one, but it can sometimes require a bit of digging to find it, which is why the pension office will ask for the coverage history.
I sent the stuff in with handbook and number, but left the ‘coverage history’ blank. Thanks for all the comments! It was really helpful and it feels good to finally have it all sent.
