How is are these teaching jobs worth keeping? I understand wanting to live in Japan, but at what costs?
You are an adult. Don’t accept no as an answer. They can’t make you live anywhere.
Usually they have a contract with an apartment already and don’t want to lose that apartment for when you leave AEON. If they are hurting for a teacher real bad, they may make an exception but AEON is really big about controlling their teachers.
If you mentioned not wanting to live in the AEON apartment, they will probably pass on your unless you are just an amazing salesperson
If they try to tell you where to live, tell them to take their job and shove it.
These shitty teaching jobs aren’t worth letting a corporation control your life and make money off you while paying you jack shite and treating you like cattle.
Make sure to stand up and let the interviewer know your wearing a suit
You can, but you still have to pay for the apartment. They do 10 year leases, and AEON teachers on average stay for about 18 months.
Its been a long time (i worked at AEON from 2001 to 2003), but I had an issue with that.
When I got the job I was satisfied to live in their Leo Palace provided apartment, no problem.
I got engaged while I was working there and wanted to move into a new place with my fiance since the Leo Palace was way too small. I spoke with my manager and asked if it was OK for me to stop living in the company apartment. Her response was:
“Yes, its absolutely fine for you to live elsewhere. We’ll keep deducting the rent for it from your pay, but you can live wherever you want.”
I ended up leaving AEON shortly before getting married.
That said, with someone they are hiring new they might be more flexible so I think its totally reasonable to bring it up at the interview. In my case I think they already had a contract with the apartment.
Interview meaning you are still not their employee. Most of the time they havent contracted the aparment by then. Ask them nicely on which they prefer that you take up the housing or not because you already have an apartment. Then judge depending on their answer
I’d frame it as you’re already good and they won’t have worry about it. If they press, I’d remind them that I’m looking for a job, not an apartment.
I asked them this in an interview 3 years ago and they said you cannot opt out of their housing. I’m pretty sure it’s because they already have a deal with the housing companies.
I’m currently working for them and someone from my training group is employed while living in their own apartment. Probably worth it to continue with the process but have a back up plan available.
When I worked with AEON, my fiancee and myself got an apartment together. I had to pay one month of not living in the AEON apartment. After doing so, they closed the lease and I was seeing a larger paycheck.
You might not have to. I know people who had their own place and started working there without having to move.

[This](https://generalunion.org/3668/) is a little old, but does cover the issue. You may have to fight for it, though.
