Hi everyone, I’ll be heading to Tokyo in the middle of January for a 8 day trip, 2 of which will be spend in Nikko. I’m planning to spend the first day around the Okunikko area before staying the night at a ryokan before heading back to Tokyo on the next day.
My main concerns are with snow and how they will affect my planned places of interests. I do hope to be able to hike the Senjogahara Marshland and up to Hangetsuyama for its observation deck, but there seems to be little information on how bad the snow is and whether it’s feasible to do these hikes. I come from the tropics, so all I have with me on this trip for footwear are a pair of trail runners.
Would also love it if you have any suggestions on good ryokans around the area. I’m planning to stay the night at Okuniku onsen but am not sure whether it’s worth the extra travel time. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to share past itineraries too!

Hangetsuyama will likely be completely covered with snow and ice and would probably need crampons at the very least.
