Dannoura

As a longtime fan of Japanese flicks, one of my top visit points is Dannoura. No one on here seems to go that direction and the pics of the memorial park look kind of…empty. Does anyone recommend the Yamaguchi area? Also, how hard is it to get a rental car as an American tourist? Thanks!

  1. Not really sure what is the link between that place and Japanese cinema. Anyway I did not stop by the park but there is a bus going. The big attraction of Shimonoseki is the fish market. Personally decided to go check some location related to the local history. There is also a pedestrian tunnel between the park and Mojiko retro. I think it’s worth going spend a day in kitakyushu next.

  2. No info about where you are going but we’ve rented a car on two separate trips to Japan and never had a problem. The last time was earlier this year in Koriyama for a Tohoku road trip and while there wasn’t a ton of English spoken they had a laminted guide that had the questions they needed answered in Japanese and English (so they could just point).

  3. Some places are just a famous place because something important happened there, but in some cases there’s little more than a memorial stone or memorial park. In that regard I think Yashima is probably more interesting than Dannoura, because there’s a lot to see, both related and unrelated to the Battle of Yashima.

For what it’s worth, the old town of Chōfu (with a nicely preserved old mansion and the national treasure temple Kōzan-ji) is kinda near the memorial park, as is national treasure shrine Sumiyoshi Jinja and (on the other side of the strait) Kokura with its reconstructed castle.

Like the other person here, I’m also curious what films you’re talking about. I’m always looking for more Nara Period or Heian Period films. Or, more generally speaking, something that’s not Sengoku, Edo or Bakumatsu.
