Visa options for short term research

Hi!

I am a researcher (holding a PhD). I got my Phd in Japan and lived there for 7 years so I got some connections in the research world. Currently, I have a long-term illness and I heard of a treatment that can only be done in Japan, in a particular city where I have a contact. This person said they could offer me a part-time job (since I have no energy to work full-time) for the duration of my treatment so I could afford to stay. However, this complicates things, because I don’t know what kind of visa I need. I intended to be there for no longer than 3 months, so a tourist visa was my first option. But with that one, I can’t work, and therefore I can’t maintain myself for the duration of my stay. Is there something like a visiting scholar visa where I could get money? I know there is one where you are not supposed to receive payment. Could I hold a researcher visa if I only work part-time? Does anybody know what my options are, if any? Thank you!!

Would it be legal to go with a short-term visiting scholar visa and for the university to pay me in paying me a place to stay but no cash?
