License use in other countries

I had a question, I am going to be getting a Japanese driver’s license soon, and I was wondering what would be the rules to use it in other countries. If I were to need to show it in a foreign country such as Ireland/USA things of that nature. Would it be accepted? Or would I need a international driver’s license. Do you have any experiences with this? I’d like to know about it whenever I travel back.
