I’ve been learning Japanese for years and rarely speak it when I’m home as one of my family member shares a room with me and I think I’ll feel embarrassed if I start chatting with one of Japanese friends while gaming 🙁
My mom sits beside me and claims that she’s okay with me making noise but I still feel bad when I chat with my friends in English. I’d try to speak really softly or hide in the bathroom. Sometimes I feel stifled like I can’t even play my guitar until the rare occasion that everyone leaves the house (it’s a tiny space).
I think a lot of factors are making me feel scared to practice speaking Japanese at home even though I like it a lot…what should I do?
Is it normal to feel scared to speak another language (in this case, Japanese) when your family is nearby?

A fellow nousagi, hi.

It’s scary, but do it. Start small.
