Marrying Japanese National, but retired / unemployed at 31, will I be able to stay in Japan on a spouse visa?

I’m retired military (disabled). Only 31 years old. Money isn’t a factor and I do have a decent savings and military pension/disability.

I intend to be unemployed while in Japan, and this makes me wonder if I will have a problem staying in Japan or securing permanent residency.

I am under the impression that being married and residing in Japan for 3 years makes me eligible to apply for permanent residency.

Will I likely be denied if I am unemployed? I can show evidence of financial independence and income/savings.

If the point system is considered, I definitely fall short, as I only have a bachelor’s and no Japanese N level certificate.

Anyone who can shed light on this is greatly appreciated.

  2. I’m also unemployed and don’t even have much if any saving on my own. That didn’t stop me from getting PR. You’ll be fine.

  3. Even if you get answers to your questions here, you should also consider getting a consultation with a Japanese immigration lawyer. Consultations are usually pretty cheap (and I think some offer for free).

  4. How did you get a military pension at 31? Are you just talking about Va disability?

To answer your question you won’t have a problem getting a PR if you are married to a local

  5. No requirement that you need to work if you’re married to a Japanese national. If there was, then all the foreign SAHMs married to Japanese men would be deported or denied PR.
