Working in IT as a women

How is working in IT like being a women in Japan ? I am planning to move there next year for work and better opportunities and because I like Japan and Japanese culture. My domain is mobile development . I Have been learning Japanese and planning to clear N4 this year . But I have heard about unfair treatment of women in corporate world and sexual harrasment. How is the situation? Should I move there ? I am kind of putting all of my eggs in a single basket by moving and I can’t afford to make mistakes here as my family needs my support to survive .

Edit : I am from India

  2. I don’t have any personal experience, but my best friend (Japanese woman in the Chuubu region) works as a systems engineer and hasn’t had any trouble with harassment in her workplace. She does have a LOT of trouble with long hours though, and daycares in Japan require heavy amounts of parental involvement which has given her some insane requests (like, needing to hand-sew cleaning rags rather than just buying them. Daycares are weird).
Being a mom in Japan is tough. Depending on what country you are moving from, that is likely to be a step down in quality of life.

  3. In America, these days we promote women for just being women, so I advise you make things easier on yourself and just go where the water flows the most smoothly. Any liberal / leftist city will have you set for life and you’ll be fast tracked to a director position for diversity and inclusion purposes. Good luck!

  4. OP seems be in India. Comparatively Japan will be higher pay and perhaps more career growth opportunities then India. And from what I’ve read of cultures, probably less prone to sexual harassment, but not by far.
I’d also say that being in “IT” and being a developer are pretty different. If you’re looking for a developer job, focus on that and not IT otherwise you get help desk style jobs.

I’d advise looking at Singapore before Japan though. Cost of living, job growth capabilities and general work life balance will be a lot better. And friendly for Indians. Then you can visit Japan a lot easier and make a bit more of a future plan.
