Good evening everyone.
I’m looking at some conflicting information on Google, so I thought I’d try here, where people seemingly regularly travel outside of Japan.
Anyway, I’m a US Passport holder and currently hold a single-entry 1 year work visa, which expires mid October. I will be traveling to Thailand next month, as well as the United States at the end of the year.
My question is: how does re-entry work with a single-entry visa? The government seems to say that I should apply for a re-entry permit at the immigration bureau, but I found other information saying that the government changed the rules several years ago and that I just have to declare that I will be returning, at the airport, before I get on my flight.
Also, will the looming expiration date of my visa affect the immigration officers’ attitude or actions (ie. refusal of entry, etc.) upon my return?
Thank you all, as always.

Your residence card is your reentry permit (if you’re in possession of one)
You get a re-entry permit at the airport, by filling in a small form before you go through passport control.
You can re-enter as long as your residence card is valid. I would get that visa extension application started soon though.
