Good day! I’m currently reading a book for Japanese beginners (Genki I think); anyway, it explains that “Sumimasen” is sometimes used to show appreciation for what someone has done for you. So is it always interchangeable with “Arigatou”?
If not, what are the contexts where “Arigatou” would be more appropriate to use, and what are the contexts where “Sumimasen” is more appropriate to use?
How do you say national holiday in Japanese? Because for some stupid reason imiwa? gave me like 4 different words… 祭日 祝日 祝祭日 旗日
So uh… my true retention rate in Anki is in the 40-50% range which seems rather poor. I’m using Kaishi 1.5k deck, tried lowering the interval modifier from 1.8 to 1.01 and my retention somehow got worse, also tried immersing but I only have 400 mature cards so it’s kinda hard to find native content that is both interesting and appropriate for my level. Any pointers?

I do not need to know Japanese for work, but Im traveling to Japan in a year, for work, and want to demonstrate an effort. I also suck at languages. Will dulingo 5 min a day give me phrases to be polite?
